Citizen Science Apps

Coming Soon

A new generation of mobile and web applications is turning ordinary citizens into data collectors for river health. Some are globally deployed with Indian presence; others are India-specific. All of them depend on volunteers like you to be useful.

This page will cover:

  • Freshwater Watch (Earthwatch Institute): global citizen science platform for measuring nitrates, phosphates, and turbidity — methodology, validation, and how Indian volunteers contribute
  • Drinkable Rivers: an international network with local hubs that use a standardised protocol to assess river health — current India presence and how to join
  • iNaturalist: how biodiversity observation apps contribute to understanding river ecology, and which freshwater species are most monitored
  • India-specific apps and initiatives: state-level or NGO-run apps for pollution reporting, litter surveys, and water testing — an honest assessment of which are actively maintained
  • What to look for in a citizen science app: data validation, protocol clarity, open data policy, and community responsiveness — how to judge whether contributing your time is worthwhile
