What this article covers

Not all river testing happens in a laboratory. A growing range of field tools — from simple colour-change test strips to handheld digital meters — let volunteers and NGOs get real-time readings on the ground. This article maps the landscape.

Topics will include:

• What field testing can and cannot do: parameters measurable in the field vs. those that require lab analysis (e.g., heavy metals, biological counts)
• Common field tools: DO meters, pH meters, turbidity tubes, nitrate and phosphate test kits — what they cost, how accurate they are, and where to source them in India
• Lab analysis workflow: how to collect and preserve a sample, which labs accept civic submissions, and typical turnaround times
• Citizen science standards: which protocols (e.g., Freshwater Watch, Rivers Project) have been peer-validated and are considered reliable enough to contribute to research databases
• Practical guide: a decision tree — “You want to test your river stretch — which approach is right for your situation?”

For volunteers and ground workers

You do not need a laboratory to contribute meaningful data. A correctly used DO meter and a simple field checklist — done consistently, at the same location, on the same day each month — can generate a time series that reveals real trends. Consistency matters more than precision.
