Coordinating a Group Drive

Intermediate

A field coordination guide for leading a group of 5–30 volunteers on a structured river drive.

Planned content:

  • Pre-drive checklist — site selection, permissions, logistics, equipment sourcing, and communication to participants.
  • Briefing structure — how to run a 10-minute pre-drive briefing that covers safety, roles, zone assignments, and protocols.
  • Zone management — dividing a stretch into workable zones, assigning leads, and maintaining communication.
  • Managing mixed skill levels — pairing experienced volunteers with first-timers; adapting tasks on the ground.
  • Incident protocol — what to do if someone is injured, finds hazardous waste, or encounters aggressive behaviour.
  • Closing the drive — waste handover, headcount, debrief structure, and documentation.
  • Post-drive reporting — what to record, who to share it with, and how to submit to Nadikosh or your NGO.
